HISTORY SOCIETY

Becoming a member of the Society

What are the benefits of being a member?

There are around 300 members including some who have moved away from the area but wish to keep in touch with local events or family connections. All members receive a bi-monthly copy of the Society’s Journal.

A regular programme of meetings is held in the winter, featuring speakers on a wide range of historical subjects mostly of local and sometimes of national interest. It is also a good time to meet other members, join in discussions, and/or enjoy a chat during the refreshment break. During the summer months of May to August, half-day or evening visits are arranged to places of interest, and usually this includes a whole day visit to somewhere further afield.

As a member you are entitled to use the Society’s Museum for research (by appointment) to borrow books from the small library and to view various documents held there. These include: Manorial Court Rolls from the 15th to the 20th century, Census Returns for 1841 to 1901, Tithe Apportionments (1843), Inclosure documents (1803-1814) and Parish Registers (1653 onwards) as well as bound copies of the Newsletter/Journal (1975 onwards).
